Terms & Conditions

The agreement between you, Kito and Caravel Rentals Zambia when you hire or list a car.

Pending legal sign-off.

These terms are written for Zambian law and best practice but must be reviewed by a Zambian legal practitioner before launch. Cancellation refund amounts below are the proposed policy.

1. Who we are

Kito is a car hire marketplace operated by Caravel Rentals Zambia ("Caravel", "we"), a company registered in the Republic of Zambia. Caravel runs the platform, the Kito Fleet, the delivery drivers and the escrow process. Independent hosts may also list their own cars. These terms are governed by the laws of Zambia, including the Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2002, the Competition and Consumer Protection Act No. 24 of 2010 and the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act of 2021.

2. Eligibility and identity

To hire you must be at least 21 years old, hold a full driving licence valid in Zambia (a Zambian licence, or a foreign licence with an International Driving Permit where required), and pass Kito's verification of your NRC or passport, licence and a live photo. We may refuse or cancel a booking if documents are unclear, expired or do not match.

3. Vehicle standards (RTSA)

Every car listed on Kito must be registered with the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA), carry valid road tax, a valid certificate of fitness where required, and at least compulsory third-party motor insurance. Cars are physically inspected and graded by Kito staff before they appear in search, and staff track road tax, fitness and insurance expiry dates. A car with an expired document must not be hired out.

Hosts warrant that their car is roadworthy, legally owned or authorised for hire, and serviced. Hosts must tell Kito immediately about any accident, defect or expired document.

4. Prices and fees

Prices are in Zambian kwacha (K). The renter pays the daily rate, a 4% platform fee on the rental charge, any delivery and collection fees, and K200 per day if a chauffeur is added. Hosts pay a 7.5% platform fee on the rental charge. The price is fixed by our server when you confirm and does not change afterwards. USD amounts are estimates only; payment is made in kwacha.

5. Payment and escrow protection

You pay by mobile money (MTN MoMo, Airtel Money or Zamtel Kwacha). Your money is held in escrow by Caravel and is not released to the host at booking. When the driver arrives, you check the car and give the driver your 6-digit release code. Only then is delivery confirmed. The host payout is then approved by an operations manager and, separately, an accountant before transfer. Never share your mobile money PIN; Kito staff will never ask for it.

6. Your obligations as a driver

  • Carry your licence and booking reference and obey the Road Traffic Act, speed limits and all RTSA and Zambia Police instructions.
  • No driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, no use of a hand-held phone while driving, and seat belts for every passenger.
  • Only verified drivers named on the booking may drive. No sub-letting, racing, towing, off-road use outside normal gravel roads, or carriage of passengers or goods for reward.
  • No travel outside Zambia without written consent from Kito and the correct cross-border documents and insurance.
  • Return the car on time, with the same fuel level, and report any accident, theft or damage to Kito and, where required, to the Zambia Police within 24 hours.
  • You are responsible for traffic fines, tolls and parking charges incurred during your hire, and for loss or damage caused by your breach of these terms, up to the limits allowed by law and any insurance cover.

7. Chauffeur and delivery drivers

Kito drivers are verified by Caravel. They complete a handover checklist with photos before the car is released, follow the Road Traffic Act, and may refuse to hand over a car if the renter's identity cannot be confirmed or the renter appears unfit to drive.

8. Cancellations

  • Before you pay: cancel at any time at no cost.
  • After payment, before the driver sets out: full refund of the amount held in escrow.
  • After the driver has set out: delivery and collection fees are not refunded; the rest of the escrow amount is refunded.
  • After the handover is confirmed: refunds are handled only through the dispute process below.
  • If the host or Kito cancels, or the car fails our checks, you receive a full refund.

Refunds are returned to the paying mobile money number, normally within 7 business days of approval.

9. Disputes and complaints

  1. Report the problem to Kito support by phone or WhatsApp within 48 hours of the event, with photos or other evidence.
  2. Kito opens a dispute. The host payout for that booking is held until the dispute is closed.
  3. Kito reviews the handover photos, checklist, messages and both parties' accounts and aims to decide within 10 business days. Any refund or payout deduction is recorded and paid by finance.
  4. If you are not satisfied, you may complain to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC). Disputes not resolved this way may be referred to arbitration under the Arbitration Act No. 19 of 2000 or to the courts of Zambia.

Nothing in these terms limits rights you have as a consumer under Zambian law.

10. Liability

Caravel is responsible for operating the platform, the escrow process and the Kito Fleet with reasonable care and skill. Caravel is not liable for losses caused by events outside its reasonable control, or by a renter's or host's breach of these terms. Nothing excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or any liability that cannot be excluded under Zambian law.

11. Changes and contact

We may update these terms and will show the new version here; the terms in force when you booked apply to that booking. Questions: see our support page. Personal data is handled under our privacy notice.
